Mondays with Mark
At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert. ~ Mark 1.9-12
I’ve attempted to make a comment on this passage three times today and expecting to be cut short again this time around so I’m gonna make this brief.
I’m in awe of the God we serve, love and follow. He with all his power comes here as a man and submits to John who dunks him in the water. I’m pretty blown away by this. I wonder why people think they don’t want to, don’t need to or are just basically unwilling to be baptized. Jesus comes and puts himself into the hands of another person and is baptized into and under the water.
God shows us clearly that this is the One his Son who he is pleased with. We see similar proclamation later on when he is on the mountain top God with nearly the same verbage…”THIS IS THE ONE.”
