In Mark 2, Jesus returns to the same town that he had performed all the healings and the mob closes in. He is in a house and the people are pouring out the front door. People that wanted to get in, that wanted to get near Jesus couldn’t… “Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them.”
Arriving at the house they saw that they couldn’t get to him. What’s next is amazing to me. They didn’t turn around, they didn’t get discouraged, nope they knew their buddy needed to get to Jesus, so they pushed on… actually they climbed… ” Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and , after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on.”
I don’t know about you, but I’m a little blown away by this whole thing. Growing up in the church and hearing this story at least a handful of times it’s easy to read right over it… but they busted through some guys roof.
But here’s where I want to get to… forgetting the destruction of some poor dudes house… what we see next is that the house is full of some religious people… ” Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, ‘why does this fellow talk like that?’ ”
I’m a little bothered by this situation honestly. A house full of people crammed in and surrounding Jesus and the religious people are in there and these guys who need to get to Jesus can’t do it the normal way, through the front door, they have to dig through a roof.
Here’s my concern… the past couple of posts I’ve shared about Jesus’ healing and the amazing new start to a community’s future and how we’re called to make straight paths to Jesus and here we see religious people blocking the way to Jesus. Stop signs… do not enter signs… wrong way signs. I wonder if this is the way people feel today as they try to figure out Jesus. They want to get to him, but it seems like there are so many barriers.
I’m just trying to hash this out in my head… are there people actively seeking? where are they going? Are people today trying to get to God, Jesus? Do they go to the church to find answers? Do they see religious people putting up barriers to their search?
